Sharing Solutions

Parents, family members, and individuals on the Spectrum often have questions and sometimes problems they are facing - and many have also found great solutions to problems because of their experience with ASD.

We invite you to take this opportunity to Share Your Solutions through AutismConnects.

Members are invited to submit both questions and solutions. If you have encountered some problem (see examples below) and had to find a solution for it yourself, please share that solution with AutismConnects so that others can benefit from your success. A committee will choose which problems/solutions to post and AutismConnects members will be able to rate each of the solutions offered.

If you have a problem and can’t find a solution, then please submit that too. We will be selecting topics for posting, in the hope that someone has a solution to your problem!

Some examples of questions:

  • I have a problem getting my child to take medications. He balks at tablets and capsules and spits liquids out. What can I do?
  • I'm a 23-year old with AS who has an upcoming job interview. I'm wondering if I should disclose my disability - and how should I do this, if I do?
  • My son won't wear shoes, socks or any other foot protection, other than boots outside in winter. The school has objected to this as the public health policy requires that he wear footwear in the school. Any suggestions?
  • How can I get my doctor to take my son's health issues seriously? He seems to attribute all of his behaviours to autism when I am sure he is acting out because he is not feeling well. My son is non-verbal and quite shy of the doctor.
  • How do you handle bystanders when you have to deal with a melt-down in a public place? People are often anxious to help, but when they intervene it only makes matters worse, and I can't (and don't want to) try to explain to them what is happening.
  • Has anyone found a solution to managing "rage" behaviour? My son (13) has outbursts that we cannot control, and that frighten us. Where do we start to try to find the source of these behaviours?
